Big Special
Alternative rock with catchy hooks and infectious melodies
A visceral assault on softer dispositions; a collision of skullcrunching guitars, head-wobbling synths and face-belting drums. Couple this with darkly humorous observations of personal mental struggle in a time of social depression and anxiety, and you’ve got... ‘SHITHOUSE’Made from an intense period of reflection during the Lockdowns, finally forming when Joe and Cal reconnected after a decade of odd jobs and projects.BIG SPECIAL are a band that wish to explore the bleak and beautiful honesty of a nation in an ever growing state of depression through personal experience, poetry, perspective as well as varied and creative music.Previously championed by the likes of; Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson on BBC Radio 6 Music, Amazing Radio, local stations and BBC Introducing up and down the country, as well as being the top of Brum Radio’s A-list for 2 weeks in a row.
Lip Critic
Wildly frenetic genre-hopping NYC band
Formed in 2018 in New York, Lip Critic is the project of Bret Kaser, Connor Kleitz, Daniel Eberle, and Ilan Natter. The band is comprised of two samplers, two drummers and vocals. Through their untraditional instrumentation, Lip Critic executes an eclectic blend of punk, hardcore, club, modernistic pop sounds, and structures without inhibition. Paired with eccentricgrandstand-style vocals, Lip Critic delivers a uniquely engaging live performance that rivals the hyper-stylized production on their records. These performances are heavily focused on improvisation and experimentation, including extended and remixed versions of songs, as well band members attaching portable lights to their bodies. Their projects include “Kill Lip Critic” in 2019, “Lip Critic II” in 2020 and “Lip Critic: Truth Revealed” in 2021.Lip Critic has earned early critical acclaim from NME (“on their way to becoming the next great NYC band”), Paste (“an apocalyptic wasteland of NYC’s best underground punk”), Rolling Stone (‘Songs You Need to Know’), Loud & Quiet (“one of NYC’s most talked about acts.”), Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC 6 Music, and Matt Wilkinson (“totally essential”) with anticipation of their debut album Hex Dealer in summer 2024.
Backxwash
trap metal star breaking away for new territories
Backxwash aka Ashanti Mutinta is a Zambian-Canadian rapper & producer based in Montreal, Quebec. She is most noted for her 2020 Polaris Music Prize-winning album God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out Of It.Her work is based in the horrorcore, hip-hop and industrial metal genres, and includes a culmination of themes around the intersection between faith, identity, and queerness. The poetry of her lyrics are the beginning of a cathartic healing process in which she is granting herself permission to be angry. In 2021 Backxwash released her 3rd album titled I LIE HERE BURIED WITH MY RINGS AND MY DRESSES and announced that it would be the second album in a trilogy. Whereas God Has Nothing was a study in mercy & forgiveness and provided some semblance of hope, I LIE HERE BURIED presents Backxwash finding solace in being completely consumed by her malevolent behaviors. Her latest album HIS HAPPINESS SHALL COME FIRST EVEN THOUGH WE ARE SUFFERING (2022) is the final LP in the trilogy. It is entirely self-produced and includes instrumental and vocal features by Morgan-Paige, Pupil Slicer, Michael Go, Censored Dialogue, Sadistik, and Ghais Guevara. Her latest album I LIE HERE BURIED WITH MY RINGS AND MY DRESSES, features productions by Backxwash, clipping., Nowhere2Run, as well as features by Censored Dialogue, Lauren Bousfield, Sad13, and Ada Rook.
Bad Nerves
Adrenaline-fuelled, no bullshit powerpop-rocknroll
Bad Nerves are a five-piece power-pop, Rock 'n' roll band from Essex, UK. The bastard child of a Ramones/Strokes one night stand, they play ferociously fast distorted pop songs, with melodies that hook so deep, even the most skilled lobotomist would struggle to scrape them out.Dubbed the “crowned Princes of power pop”, the five-piece are setting a new standard for adrenaline-fuelled pop-rock music. The band were also recently hand-picked by Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day) for his Oakland Coffee playlist as well as being labelled by Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam) as one of his recent favourite bands. With a sound reminiscent of Jay Reatard, Supergrass and FIDLAR, Bad Nerves kicked off their highly-anticipated sophomore album with its lead single ‘USA’, complete with US and UK tour. Look for the full album to drop in 2024 after a string of high-octane singles.
Slift
Space-psych trio preparing for a religious experience
SLIFT is made up of brothers Jean and Remí Fossat and Canek Flores, who first met the brothers Fossat at (of all things) school. After the band formally came together in 2016, they quickly made their 2017 debut EP, Space Is the Key, which merged stoner rock’s heaviness with the sugar-rush qualities of garage rock. From there, things only got weirder: The trio experimented with faster tempos and bongos(!) on the following year’s full-length La Planeté Inexploreé, and in 2019, their KEXP session recorded at the Trans Musicales festival in Rennes became a viral sensation, racking up more than 1.4 million YouTube views.
Stake
post-rock vs. sludge metal
Kleine Crack & Slagter
Horror rap with a punk vibe
Show Me the Body
Monumental NY hardcore band turning water to blood live
Show Me The Body is a New York City based ecclesiastical hardcore trio consisting of Julian Cashwan Pratt (founder; banjo and vocals), Harlan Steed (founder; bass), and Jackie McDermott (current drummer). The band has organized non-traditional, intentional DIY spaces for NYC youth since 2015, and since expanded that work to a global capacity through their urgent, ceremonial live shows, subterranean punk and hip-hop mixed tours, and their CORPUS NYC platform.
Enter Shikari
Trancecore tour-de-force in the live arena
Since forming in 2003 at school in their hometown of St Albans, U.K, Enter Shikari has, thus far, released seven full-length studio albums; TAKE TO THE SKIES (2007), COMMON DREADS (2009), A FLASH FLOOD OF COLOUR (2012), THE MINDSWEEP (2015), THE SPARK (2017). NOTHING IS TRUE & EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE (2020), and the latest, A KISS FOR THE WHOLE WORLD which was released Friday 21st April 2023.All seven albums debuted in the UK Album Chart top 5 “midweeks”, with 2023’s 'A Kiss For The Whole World' finally scoring the band their first ever UK Album Chart #1 record. Enter Shikari have been recipients of multiple awards and topped many a magazine reader’s poll, picking up 'Best Live Band’ gongs like there’s no tomorrow, as well as a plethora of ‘Best UK Artist’ and ‘Best Album’ statuettes, from the likes of Kerrang!, Rock Sound, the Heavy Music Awards and NME.Summer 2020 saw the band announce a partnership / shirt sponsorship with local football team St Albans City FC. Frontman / songwriter / producer Rou Reynolds has published four books with Faber Music, the most recent (and most ambitious) being a ‘A Treatise On Possibility’ in the summer of 2021. As well as Rou Reynolds authored publications, in October 2022 Faber Music also published ‘Standing Like Statues - The Enter Shikari Biography’ written by Kerrang! Magazine editor Luke Morton.Enter Shikari have played somewhere in the region of 3000 live shows around the globe, including three headline arena-sized tours in the UK, substantial UK / Europe arena supports in their early career with The Prodigy, Linkin Park and 30 Seconds To Mars, and more big and small festivals worldwide than it would be possible to list here. The band’s last full U.K tour (December 2021) sold out across the board, including the band’s fourth headline show at London’s 10,000 capacity Alexandra Palace.2023 kicked straight off with Enter Shikari releasing the single ‘(pls) set me on fire’ in January, accompanying an announcement of their new album, and what became known as the Residency Tour, which took in five British cities over the course of one week, repeating for three months. In May 2023, Enter Shikari announced UK arena tour dates for 2024, including the band’s first ever Wembley Arena show. In recognition of the grassroots touring scene which birthed the band, the band has pledged £1 from every ticket sale for the tour to be donated to the Music Venue Trust to support grassroots music venues in the UK. The band also announced a short European run, including the largest German and Netherlands shows Enter Shikari has played thus far. The band kicked off festival season for summer 2023 by headlining the UK’s Slam Dunk Festival in Hertfordshire and Leeds.
Hang Youth
Ass-kicking Dutch punk
Hang Youth is unanimously known as Holland's most important band. They radicalised an entire generation of kids and became the voice of a protest generation. They blocked the A12 motorway, played both Pinkpop and Lowlands, sat in on all those silly talk shows, kicked up a fuss and stole hearts. Now Abel, Kaj, Ben and Nout are banging on, angrier than ever.
Jesus Piece
Pure, ripping, riff-fueled fury
In hardcore, the pit can be performative– clapping replaced by stage dives, cheers replaced by back-kicks or circle pitting. But you can always tell the difference between going through the motions and truly visceral emotion, especially while watching a band of Jesus Piece’s pedigree. In a recent NYC appearance, the quintet turned a typically indie live room into awarzone complete with humans as step stools, railings and wall-mounted tables as diving boards, and missiles created from anything not nailed down, including the disco ball. “The number one thing is the live performance,” says drummer Luis Aponte regarding JP’s venomous live reputation. “You can be in the studio and make that record sound insane but if you’re not giving that same energy, that same feeling when you play live, it just doesn’t matter.”It all comes from a near shamanistic quality in the band, where frontman Aaron Heard uses a manic, livewire vocal delivery ala Busta Rhymes to the orchestrate the crowd’s kinetic energy— pushing further toward utter mayhem and culminating in a show that stands tall among their genre peers and live music writ large. Jesus Piece is a live phenomenon, only possibly held back by a heretofore limited recorded output. Their time has come with So Unknown, the new and second Jesus Piece LP, the follow-up to their white-hot Only Self.So Unknown is their Century Media debut and broadcasts what fans already knew– Jesus Piece is a fully articulated armored vehicle of metallic-hardcore obliteration. Invoking all of the swinging groove of Chaos A.D. / Roots-era Sepultura, the weapons-grade precision of Godflesh and the terror-inducing start-stop rhythms of Meantime-era Helmet, fans have finally ascended to the apex of metal and hardcore– a mix of complex instrumentation that is unafraid to make room for a simple groove. JP has created an effort that never fails to impress, gets to the point and never gets in its own way. And much like their live show, their patented mid-tempo sound is only a jumping off point to chaos- ably utilizing half-speed breakdowns, left-turns into riffage at breakneck speed and moody ambient atmosphere effectively. So Unknown is a cluster bomb of ten hate anthems bursting at the seams with memorable riffs and pulsing with fresh ideas. The record wastes no time from the starting gun, kicking off with a roar from Heard. From there, album highlights like “Gates of Horn” infuse in industrial ambiance juxtaposed against start-stop rhythms that recall classic Ministry, breathing and blasting before merging towards a terrifying, swinging groove. “Tunnel Vision” begins with an atonal riff straight out of the black metal playbook before settling into a piledriving double-kick section and then into a half-speed wrecking ball. “Silver Lining” begins almost deceptively clean with an eerie Coil-esque atmosphere into a minor scale riff, followed byanother mid-tempo steamroller before opening back up into relative calm. “FTBS” is all groove though, a neck-snapping crowd killer that slithers and bangs with notes of Meshuggah until it slows towards a crawl for its final death march.Co-produced and mixed by Randy LeBouef (Every Time I Die, Orthodox) and clocking in at a lean and mean 28 minutes, So Unknown documents the lives of the bands’ five members as they step into life’s abyss and react to the changes. “The making of the record was nothing short of all-consuming. It was an intense and challenging process,” recalls Aponte. “The record reflects a lot of confusion, but also, evolution. There was a lot of uncertainty and emotion during the pandemic– we all changed and grew so much. So if there is a single thought or concept to the record, it’s constant metamorphosis. That’s also how we operated as a band on this LP– spending a lot of time songwriting and fleshing things out as a unit, and then upping our game from there. It’s definitely a reflection of us as more mature, playing the best we’ve ever played and feeling like a real band for the first time.”Jesus Piece is composed of vocalist Aaron Heard, guitarists David Updike and John Distefano, and drummer Luis Aponte. Formed in Philadelphia in 2015, the band released a trio of EPs (the S/T EP, 3 Song Tape and the Malice at the Palace split) before delivering their massive 2018 debut LP for Southern Lord Records, Only Self. The release stood head and shoulders over much of the hardcore and metal crowd, with a diversity that can be credited to the unique approach and chemistry between the members. Hell, even their name bypasses typical hardcore naming conventions and instead originates from a piece of jewelry loved by the hip hop crowd. “It’s been the same five guys from the start,” says drummer Luis Aponte. “That’s extremely rare for any band and it says a lot about us as we’ve been able to progress together. We all have our own lives, our own backgrounds and our own individual style. I think that informs the music that we’ve made from the beginning tonow.”Even with a triumphant new LP in pocket, Aponte is quick to come back to Jesus Piece’s core competency when it comes to the release, and how they work well with one another. “A big goal on ‘So Unknown’ outside of songwriting and technical goals was to capture the same energy on record that we have live- for people to get that sense of urgency and danger.” explains Aponte. “I think that LeBeouf captured that with everything on the record, from Aaron’s vocals to the dynamics and the overall tone. This is as close to a Jesus Piece experience as you’re going to get without standing in front of us.”
Hot Milk
Manchester punk-rockers on the rise
Hot Milk are an emo power-pop duel fronted band from Manchester, England. Jim and Han met in a bar in the Northern Quarter in 2016, became fast friends and have lived together ever since. What started over a bottle of wine and an acoustic guitar in their living room, whilst it pissed it down outside, quickly became their vice and way to survive through everyday life. The Manchester weather coupled with their persistent desire to fill a meaning-shaped hole meant that one song quickly turned into fifteen after running home from work during lunch breaks and staying up all night.Singing sad songs with happy melodies, Hot Milk are a celebration of the real. With Fun, Family and Kindness at the forefront of their minds, Hot Milk hope to create an open and warm sphere where everyone is invited.
Motionless In White
Gothic metalcore champs
Motionless In White harnessed the power of an unholy union between industrial metal dissonance, spellbinding gothic pop bombast, and big screen-worthy iconography to emerge as 21stcentury rock’s most iconoclastic and cinematic force. Climbing out of the shadows of the rustbelt in Scranton, PA, the group have tirelessly earned the undying allegiance of a devout worldwide audience one record at a time. With over half-a-billion cumulative streams and views to date, they have notched three consecutive Top 5 debuts on the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums Chart and Top Rock Albums Chart with Reincarnate [2014], Graveyard Shift [2017], and Disguise [2019]. The latter spawned the inescapable “Another Life,” which tallied over 100 million streams and counting. Not to mention, Jonathan Davis of Korn, Maria Brink of In This Moment, and Dani Filth of Cradle of Filth have welcomed the opportunity to collaborate. After countless sold-out gigs and festivals, they co-headlined the Trinity Of Terror Tour, selling out venues coast-to-coast. However, everything set the stage for their 2022 opus, Scoring The End of the World. Right out of the gate, the single “Cyberhex” trended Top 10 on YouTube, while the follow-up “Masterpiece” lit up streaming platforms. With guests as diverse Bryan Garris of Knocked Loose, Caleb Shomo of Beartooth, and video game composer Mick Gordon, the album finds the group’s vision magnified wider than ever before with no shortage of teeth, fire, and blood. It’s the dawn of their biggest chapter yet. Motionless In White are Chris Motionless [Vocals], Ricky Olson [Guitar], Ryan Sitkowski [Guitar], Vinny Mauro [Drums], and Justin Morrow [Bass].
